On the ferry back to Tenerife Rob talks about the atmosphere he experienced before the start of the first Atlantic rowing race. Leading into that race the statistics for ocean rows were not good. There hadn’t been that many attempts, and of those about half had failed. Five boats and their crews have been lost at sea.

‘Those stats were hanging over all of us,’ Rob says. ‘There was a real intensity in the air. It felt like we were going off to war.’

‘Did anyone die in your race?’ asks Jamie.

‘No, but six boats didn’t make it, and a couple of people were injured and taken off their boats. I can’t put my finger on what makes me think this, but the crews there today seemed a bit too casual. It’s a worry — the risks are real.’
